Job Preview

The Certified Athletic Trainer provides athletic training and sports medicine services to local student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and assistance with safe return to participation. This position works closely with student-athletes, families, coaches, athletic directors, and HMC physicians to provide quality sports medicine services.

The Certified Athletic Trainer may also serve as a Physician Extender in HMC clinics when needed , providing clinical support to physicians and healthcare staff within applicable scope of practice and organizational requirements.

This position requires flexibility to accommodate athletic schedules and may include evenings, weekends, athletic events, practices, tournaments, and other scheduled activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Athletic Training and Sports Medicine

• Provide athletic training services and medical coverage for local high school athletic programs.
• Provide coverage for games, practices, tournaments, and other athletic events as assigned.
• Evaluate and assess athletic injuries and illnesses and communicate findings and recommendations to appropriate individuals.
• Develop and implement appropriate injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and conditioning programs.
• Assist with determining and communicating return-to-participation recommendations in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
• Monitor athletes during treatment and rehabilitation and communicate progress as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation activities.
• Educate student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, and staff regarding injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and health and safety.
• Coordinate athletic training coverage and services with athletic directors and coaching staff.
• Assist with outreach programs, educational presentations, coaches' clinics, and community sports medicine initiatives.

Physician Extender and Clinical Support

• Conduct patient assessments and present findings to physicians when serving as a Physician Extender in HMC clinics.
• Assist physicians and clinical staff with patient care and treatment as directed and within applicable scope of practice.
• Assist with patient education, documentation, and other clinical activities as assigned.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, clinical staff, patients, and families.
• Work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to support quality patient care.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate and timely patient and athletic training records.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Maintain compliance with HMC policies, professional standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
• Participate in required meetings, training, continuing education, and professional development activities.
• Maintain current knowledge of athletic training and sports medicine practices.
• Participate in professional athletic training organizations and continuing education activities as appropriate.
• Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, dependability, and flexibility.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or entry-level Master's degree in Athletic Training from an accredited program.
• Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification .
• Current Illinois Athletic Trainer license or eligibility for Illinois licensure.
• Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain certification upon hire.
• Strong clinical knowledge, assessment, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with student-athletes, families, coaches, physicians, and healthcare professionals.
• Ability to provide individualized and age-appropriate care.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a healthcare team.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and other hours as required by athletic schedules and assigned activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working with high school or collegiate athletic programs.
• Previous experience in sports medicine, orthopedic, rehabilitation, or outpatient clinical settings.
• Experience working as a physician extender or providing clinical support in a healthcare setting.
• Experience working with athletes of varying ages and skill levels.
• Additional certifications or training relevant to athletic training or sports medicine.

Physical Requirements

• Constantly (67–100% of the time): Standing, walking, talking, hearing, near visual acuity, and use of hands and fingers for patient care, athletic training activities, documentation, and equipment operation.
• Frequently (34–66% of the time): Bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, and moving throughout athletic and clinical environments.
• Frequently: Assist with positioning, transferring, and supporting patients or athletes as necessary while using appropriate body mechanics and available equipment.
• Occasionally (11–33% of the time): Lifting and carrying equipment and supplies associated with athletic training and patient care.
• As needed: Respond quickly to athletic injuries and emergency situations and assist with emergency care activities.
• Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including athletic fields, gymnasiums, training rooms, clinics, and other assigned locations.
• Ability to safely perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a variety of athletic and healthcare settings, including high school athletic facilities, athletic fields, gymnasiums, training rooms, HMC clinics, and other community locations.

The employee may be exposed to varying weather conditions, uneven surfaces, physical activity, athletic injuries, infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and other healthcare or environmental hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided when necessary and must be used in accordance with established policies.

The position requires frequent interaction with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, athletic directors, physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required based on athletic schedules and organizational needs.

All HMC employees are required to successfully complete applicable federal and state background checks and a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
